Gas Prices

Why do gasoline prices vary so much from gas station to gas station?

One reason:

Local Chicago news program reports that some gas stations sell gas at a loss to get people in to buy other products (Jewel, Meijer, stations with convenience stores). Chain stations will sometimes sell at a loss when they open a new store to compete with the existing stations in the area.

In an effort to normalize gas prices, illinois legislators are considering introducing a bill that would make it illegal to sell gas at a loss, much like a law on the books in Wisconsin.

In other words, we might someday be assured that we'll all get to pay the same high price for gasoline everywhere we buy it.

Best Buy had the same philosophy with CDs/DVDs. They would sell these items at prices below retail, believing that if the metal-kids came in to buy the new Obituary CD that they'd probably pick up a washer/dryer set while they were in the store.

They lost their ass.
